About

Rice Hulls (or rice husks) are the hard protective coverings on grains of rice. In addition to protecting rice during the growing season, rice hulls can be put to use as animal bedding, building material, fertilizer, insulation material or fuel. Downes Rice Hulls provide Rice Hulls primarily for animal bedding as Rice Hulls don't require as much litter depth as other forms of litter, therefore they can cover larger areas with similar volume, and are insect resistant and virtually fire proof. An advantage of using Rice Hulls is that it lets the moisture drain through to the bottom of the hulls which keeps the top layers dry, therefore the animals have dry bedding which make them more comfortable and relaxed. The ease of spreading Rice Hulls - and halving of the normal clean out time, is a big advantage of using Rice Hulls for animal bedding. Discarded Rice Hulls from poultry bedding (including droppings), is an excellent fertiliser for the growing of Mushrooms and other hot house vegetables.
